If you're even remotely alert, you've probably noticed that half the girls at your local grocery store and coffee shop and mall and — you get the picture — are rocking feather strands in their hair. It's the newest beauty trend to fly through LA, and it lends instant '70s glam. Feather extensions run the gamut from $10 up to $30 per strand, and they wash in out anywhere from three to 12 weeks. But, like every trend, there are good feather extensions and then there are tacky ones that look cheap. I hit up the chicks who are sporting the fine kind; here's where they've gone to get theirs, and where you can go to get yours.

  • Tangles Salon (145 W. Green St., Pasadena, 626-792-2948) in Old Town Pasadena does all kinds of hair extensions, but its most popular right now is the feather. A single strand is $10, a bundle of seven is $40, and reapplications are $5 each. No matter if you have curly or straight hair, feather extensions can be washed, curled, and straightened.
  • When shopping at Santa Monica Place, make a quick stop to Carlton Hair (395 Santa Monica Pl., Ste. 254, Santa Monica, 310-260-9503) for fabulous feather extensions that look like a natural extension of your hair. Here they usually charge $15 for the first feather and $10 for additional strands.
  • Byron & Tracey Salon (9294 Civic Center Dr., Beverly Hills, 310-276-4470) At $25 to $30 for one strand, feather extensions here aren't cheap, but you better believe they're high-quality. One of Dancing with the Stars stylist Kit Scarbo's assistant stylists got hers there and it looked flawless.
  • Lorraine Colour Bar (2718 Main St., Santa Monica, 310-450-4848) This Santa Monica salon, which charges $25 for three feather strands, just got a new shipment of extensions in, so you can pick from a bevy of colors.
